Student Government Question and Answer

Students I talked with didn’t know what effect student government has on our school – or even what they do. Freya Heinzer, one of the freshman class representatives, hopes to clear up some of this confusion.

Q. What does our Student Government do?
A: “Student Government organizes school functions (Prom, Homecoming, etc) and addresses problems in our school.”

Q. Why is Student Government important?
A: “It incorporates the student body into planning school events and adds voices for school administration to listen to.”

Q. What was the process to get into Student Government?
A. “Anyone can join Student Gov! Just show up on Wednesday mornings at 8. But if you want to be class rep or treasurer, etc. you have to run for your position. This year, you just told the President that you were running (the President was voted on last year) and then made a post about yourself and then your class would vote.”

Q. When are the meetings held and what are the meetings like?
A. “On Wednesday everyone meets. But on Thursday the leadership team (class reps, President, etc.) meets with our principal and we discuss logistics. On Wednesday, anyone can bring ideas on what we should do next and help us achieve that goal.”

Q. What were some of the things that Student Government had done this year?
A. “This year we have organized Homecoming and Winter Festival.”

Q. Are you now in student government forever, or do you have to get reelected every year?
A. “If you want to be on the leadership team you get reelected every year, but if you are not you can show up when you want.”

Q. What is your favorite part of being in Student Government?
A. “My favorite part of student government is being able to organize events and have a say.”
