Burlington High School senior Anders Ode has been named a 2017 U.S. Presidential Scholar, one of the nation’s highest honors for secondary students, according to a news release from the district on Friday.

Ode, who will be attending Harvard University this fall, is just one of 161 high school seniors to receive this national distinction.

The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars selects students annually based on academic success, artistic excellence, essays, transcripts, as well as community service and leadership. Created in 1964, the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program has honored almost 7,500 of the nation’s top-performing students.

“His best attributes are his attention to detail and his curiosity,” Ode’s AP Statistics Teacher Marcel Girouard said in the release. “It’s been a privilege to teach Anders this year.”

Candidates qualified for the 2017 awards by outstanding performance on the College Board SAT and ACT exams, through nominations made by Chief State School Officers, other partner recognition organizations or the National YoungArts Foundation’s nationwide YoungArts™competition.

The 2017 U.S. Presidential Scholars are comprised of one young man and one young woman from each state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, and from U.S. families living abroad, as well as 15 chosen at-large, 20 U.S. Presidential Scholars in the Arts and 20 U.S. Presidential Scholars in Career and Technical Education, according to the organization’s website.

Ode will be recognized on June 18 at a ceremony in Washington D.C., where each honoree will receive a Presidential Scholar Medallion.
