Board Member’s Facebook Page Prompts Calls to Resign

Burlington School Board Member David Kirk is drawing complaints and calls for his resignation after a series of Facebook posts surfaced that are racist and degrading to women, immigrants and students.

The outcry comes at a tense time for the Burlington School District. Teachers and school board members are holding a final mediation session today, following a strike vote by the union last week.

Kirk represents Ward 7 in the New North End.

“He needs to resign immediately. This man should have nothing to do with our schools,” wrote commenter Devon Ayers on the Support Our Burlington Schools Facebook page.

Many members of the Facebook page are asking that Kirk, whose term does not expire until 2018, step down.

The board member posted a number of memes that that criticize immigrant students, defend the Confederate flag and joke about education. The posts span between Monday and several years. The majority of Kirk’s Facebook content uses vulgar and explicit language and was shared from predominately conservative websites.
