1. Take a hike!
Vermont is well-known for its stunning colors during Fall. One of the best ways to experience the famous foliage is to hike one of Vermont’s many mountains. For a small, yet satisfying hike, try Charlotte’s Mount Philo, a 40-minute climb followed by a great view. More ambitious hikers can visit Vermont’s Mount Mansfield or Mount Abraham. If you want to get away in town try Derway Island, or nearby Bolton Valley. Pack a sandwich and a sweatshirt to enjoy the views from the top!
2. Bike the Stowe Recreation Path
Stowe’s Recreation Path is located right next to the town, and stretches 5.3 miles through valleys, over bridges, and through forests. The path is simple and flat, but still offers beautiful views of Mount Mansfield and Stowe Mountain. Bikers can stop to enjoy the West Branch River or relax on one of the many benches that line the path. Stop for lemonade at Stowe’s Tres Amigos restaurant or the Idyltime brewery.
3. Eat Out on the Church Street Marketplace
Burlington’s Church Street is a cozy place, especially during the Fall months. Be sure to check out some of the marketplace’s outdoor dining. Some restaurants have outdoor heating while others offer indoor options. For a warm, rustic meal, try Burlington’s Farmhouse, or the French-style of Leunig’s Bistro. For a more budget-friendly option, grab a slice of pizza at Ken’s or a sandwich at Kountry Kart Deli. Burlington’s Church Street is lacking in Canadian tourists this year but makes up for this by flocks of New Englanders who visit instead. Church Street is a great place to people-watch, especially at this time of year.
4. Try out a New Recipe
Cold weather calls for cozy socks, fall-scented candles, and warm homemade food. This Fall, try out a new recipe, or, whip out an old family one. Try making soup and delivering some to a neighbor or a relative who lives close by.
5. Support BHS Athletes!
Although BHS itself is physically closed, Burlington sports are up and running. Spend a chilly afternoon at Buckhard Field at BHS watching field hockey, soccer, volleyball, football, or cross country! Spend an evening watching a game under the lights if daytime is busy. Game times are listed on the BHS calendar.
6. Go Apple Picking
What beats a perfectly ripe Vermont apple? Picking it yourself. Apple picking is the perfect way to spend some time with friends while still keeping socially distant. Try Shelburne Orchards or Boyer’s Orchard. Opt for mask-wearing and bring your own bags, and the experience will be as sweet as an apple cider doughnut.
7. Get into a Spooky Mood
Spend some quality time with family telling ghost stories, or watching a scary movie. I like to rewatch old Twilight Zone episodes (To Serve Man, and the Living Doll are two of my personal favorites). Classic horror movies like The Sixth Sense and The Corpse Bride can never go wrong. Although Halloween may not happen in the same way this year, it means we have more time to decorate and get spooky from home.
8. Go for a Scenic Drive
Consider driving through some of Vermont’s small towns. Route 9 is known for its beautiful views. Stop for a walk and a hot coffee, or pile in the car with a close friend for a destinationless road trip. Bring an actual map.
9. Visit the last Farmers’ Market
As warm weather comes to an end, the Burlington Farmers’ Market prepares for its last day. You can still visit this week on Saturday, October 17, from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm. The Farmers’ Market offers local crafts, produce, and much more. Be sure to visit before it’s gone!
10. Spend Time Outside
Take advantage of the beautiful weather this season. The CDC encourages “small outdoor gatherings, with a small group of friends or family members”. Winter in Vermont can get pretty cold, so celebrate outdoors before it becomes impossible. Try a picnic with close friends, or even a walk through your neighborhood. Get some fresh air and try to stay 6 feet apart!
