Spectrum Youth and Family Services will be hosting a Multicultural Youth Leadership Conference on Saturday, May 6 at Champlain College. The student-organized event runs from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The organizing team consists of four current Burlington High School students, and three BHS graduates; who are now working for Burlington Parks & Recreation, Spectrum and the Community Economic Development Office (CEDO). Other local students are also involved.
Ahmed Adan, Hawa Adan, Misky Noor and Hamdi Jafar are the current BHS students working on planning the conference.
This event includes free breakfast and lunch, raffle prizes, giveaways and a resource fair at which students will be able to connect with various resources in their community. Organizers hope the conference will leave students with leadership skills and the power to make change in their communities.
There will be four sessions during the day, with five workshops in each session. Topics include having conversations about racism, creative writing, breaking down cultural barriers, dealing with conflict and a DJ workshop.
Students can earn community service hours by attending workshops.
